BIOGRAPHY Dr. Cogan was born on February 14, 1908, in Fall River, Massachusetts. He received his BA from Dartmouth, his MD from Harvard Medical School, and completed an ophthalmology residency at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He served as Chair of Harvard Ophthalmology from 1955-1973, and Director of the Howe Laboratory of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School from 1940 to 1974. After leaving Harvard, Dr. Cogan served for 20 years as Senior Scientist at the National Eye Institute (NEI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The David Glendenning Cogan Professorship was established in 1969. Two more chairs in his honor were established in 2010 and 2011.
