Elizabeth Rossin appointed AY 2018-2019 Chief Resident

Elizabeth (Lizzy) Rossin, MD, PhD, currently a second year resident, has been selected Chief Resident and Director of the Mass. Eye and Ear Eye Trauma Service for the academic year 2018-2019. In this vital role, Dr. Rossin will oversee one of the busiest ocular trauma centers in the country and serve as teacher and mentor to the Department’s cadre of 24 residents. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Rossin also will serve as a key member of the Residency program leadership team and teaching faculty.

A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Rossin received her MD/PhD from the Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Institute of Technology Health Sciences & Technology Program.  During medical school, Dr. Rossin applied her experience in genetics to ophthalmology at Mass. Eye and Ear; using next-generation sequencing, she worked with Janey Wiggs, MD, PhD, to look for genetic risk factors underlying angle-closure glaucoma in patients taking Topamax, and with Lucia Sobrin, MD, MPH,, on network analysis in genetics of diabetic retinopathy.

During residency, Dr. Rossin has distinguished herself as a talented and compassionate clinician, a gifted surgeon, and a promising investigator.  As the first recipient of the Gragoudas-Folkman Award for resident research, Dr. Rossin’s current work uses a novel network-based algorithm to identify critical regions within the proteins of pathogens to guide the rational design of vaccines against organisms such as HIV and HSV, the leading causes of infectious ophthalmic disease worldwide. An innovative thinker and leader, Dr. Rossin served as the Chair of the Pre-Medical Committee at Lowell House, Harvard College during her MD/PhD training, and is the creator and host of the Broad Institute’s website for DAPPLE (Disease Association Protein-Protein Link Evaluator). Dr. Rossin has been an important contributor to the residency program over the past two years, and we look forward to the diverse talents and leadership skills that she will bring to this important faculty position.

Dr. Rossin’s appointment will follow that of Tomasz (Tommy) Stryjewski, MD, MPP, who will serve as Chief Resident and Director of the Eye Trauma Service for the upcoming academic year, 2016-2017.
