A team of Mass Eye and Ear faculty, led by [Michael Boland, MD, PhD](https://eye.hms.harvard.edu/people/michael-v-boland-md-phd), Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, are one of four groups selected to participate in the Expand Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) Initiative for Eye Care and Ocular Imaging Challenge. Each of the teams will receive $250,000 from the National Eye Institute (NEI) to develop ways to investigate eye health and vision preservation using the OHDSI network, an open-science multidisciplinary collaborative working to improve health outcomes based on real-world evidence derived from observational health data in health records.

Dr. Boland, along with team members [Lucia Sobrin, MD, MPH](https://eye.hms.harvard.edu/luciasobrin); [Ines Lains, MD, PhD](https://eye.hms.harvard.edu/people/in%C3%AAs-la%C3%ADns-md-msc-phd); [Tobias Elze, PhD](https://eye.hms.harvard.edu/tobiaselze); and Pearse Keane, MD, a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, will work to standardize ophthalmic data in the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model across US and UK institutions using Epic Clarity and INSIGHT models. By mapping key eye care data elements and creating supportive documentation, it will fill OMOP gaps and enable scalable, global vision research.
