# Faculty Visit to Haiti

February 02, 2016

The Office of Global Surgery and Health recently coordinated the second faculty visit to Haiti State University Hospital in Port-au-Prince to work with the residency program there. **[Roberto Pineda II, MD](/robertopineda),** and **[Shizuo Mukai, MD](/shizuomukai),** returned after their initial faculty visit in June 2015. The focus of this visit was on resident education, with a particular focus on combining ophthalmology fundamentals with modern innovation. Dr. Pineda trained residents in corneal transplantation with cornea tissue generously donated by the Lions Eye Institute (Tampa). Dr. Mukai showed residents how to use smartphone-based retinal photography in the absence of expensive equipment.
