 

#  Tobias Elze, PhD, Receives Harvard Ophthalmology Excellence in Mentoring Award

 [Tobias Elze, PhD](/tobiaselze), Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, received the 2024 Harvard Ophthalmology Excellence in Mentoring Award for his dedication to mentoring.

 Dr. Elze first joined the department in 2011 as a research fellow and was appointed to the faculty in 2013. Now an Associate Professor, he has mentored 16 trainees and junior faculty members throughout his career with the department. Among the nine postdoctoral research fellows Dr. Elze has mentored, four have gone on to become faculty members at top academic intuitions, including Harvard Ophthalmology, and two others went on to successful careers in industry. He has also been instrumental in helping junior faculty secure K grant funding and continued to mentor them as they completed their NIH research projects. Dr. Elze has also assisted other faculty members with finding research collaborators and securing foundational research funding.

 Dr. Elze's nominators shared that:

- "As a junior faculty member, I benefitted greatly from Tobias’s support. After completing my fellowship, my discussions with Tobias helped shape my research ideas for my K12 and K23 applications. He became a catalyst for multiple collaborations that have led to successful NIH and foundation funding."
