Dr. Amee Azad was born and raised in Southern Indiana and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, MO with her BA in Biochemistry and Anthropology. As an undergraduate, she leveraged qualitative research methods and her background in community organizing to study the effects of racial inequities, discrimination, and linguistic profiling on healthcare access in St. Louis. Her work earned First Place Senior Honors Thesis from the Washington University in St. Louis’ Department of Anthropology. She also received the Department of Biochemistry Award for Excellence in Teaching and was an honorary member of Sigma Xi Research and Lambda Alpha Anthropology.

Dr. Azad went on to earn her MD and MS in Epidemiology and Clinical Research from Stanford University School of Medicine. Here, she continued her work on discrimination in healthcare access by studying the effects of sociocultural and economic factors on gender disparities in access to surgical care in Lilongwe, Malawi. She also went on to study gender disparities in academic ophthalmology in the United States across subspecialties, and analyzed socioeconomic disparities in the treatment of common ophthalmologic conditions. Her work was supported by several awards, including a Stanford University Medical Scholars Research Grant, a Clayman Institute for Gender Research Marjorie Lozoff Research Grant, a Dee Mann Schroder Medical Scholarship, and an Atkinson Medical Scholarship. In addition to her research, she founded the Stanford Health Justice Coalition, which serves to organize Stanford Medicine staff, students, and faculty to support Dreamers, the Black Lives Matters movement, and the protection of patients’ rights.

After medical school, Dr. Azad completed a Transitional Year Internship at Newton Wellesley Hospital as part of Harvard Ophthalmology’s four-year integrated residency program. To date, she has published over 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals including *Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology,* and *Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science*. She has presented her work at conferences including Association for Research in Vision Science, Annual Macula Society Meeting, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the International Orbital Society.
