Investing in resilience-promoting programs for trainees is a priority for our department. The wellness of our residents and fellows affects not only themselves and the people in their lives, but also our patients and the hospital community as a whole. Trainee resilience is key to enhancing patient care and ensuring we do not face a physician shortage in the future.

That is why we created a Resident Wellness Committee. This committee includes representatives from all classes of residents, as well as faculty members. Projects range from structural to social and curricular. Examples of recent initiatives include:

- Completed an impressive renovation of the resident and fellow study suite, which is dedicated to Frederick A. Jakobiec, MD, DSc, as part of his $5.5 million bequest to aid our trainees. The open, shared workspace also functions for meetings and social gatherings.
- Launched pop-up dinners, allowing residents to gather informally as a community, as well as end of rotation celebratory social events known as “block parties”
- Secured call rooms in all training locations, ensuring our residents have places to stay during hospital overnight clinical responsibilities.
- Secured a lactation room for trainee use.
- Improved access to the large number of resources available to Mass General Brigham employees with our residents, including round-the-clock access to counseling via the Trainee Assistance Program.
- Instituted regular group support sessions for junior residents with a clinical psychologist, as well as one-on-one sessions with the same psychologist as needed for all residents.
