[VA Maine Healthcare System](https://www.va.gov/directory/guide/facility.asp?id=136) is the oldest veterans' facility in the country, having opened in the fall of 1866. The facility is located five miles east of Augusta. The campus encompasses 500+ acres of buildings and natural woodlands serving as natural habitats for Maine's wildlife. Additionally, the [Togus National Cemetery](http://www.maine.va.gov/about/Cemetery2.asp) is located on the campus.
