 **BIOGRAPHY** Dr. Streilein, a noted immunologist, shaped a renewed research mission that brought the entire spectrum of the biological sciences to bear on vision research. He served as the [Charles L. Schepens Professor of Ophthalmology](/professorships/schepens) and Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School. Under his leadership, first as Director of Research and then as President, [Schepens Eye Research Institute](/schepens) expanded to include important new technologies such as gene therapy, stem cell research, nerve regeneration and tissue engineering.
