Joan W. Miller, MD, Honored for Her Contributions to Education

Joan W. Miller, MD

Joan W. Miller, MD, the David Glendenning Cogan Professor of Ophthalmology and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, is the 2025 recipient of the Simmons Lessell Excellence in Education Award. Presented during our clinical graduation ceremony on June 18, the award recognizes faculty who have made—and continue to make—sustained and profound contributions to education—just like Dr. Simmons Lessell. A key clinical and educational leader in the Harvard Department of Ophthalmology for over 30 years, Dr. Lessell passed away in May 2016.

Dr. Miller's impact on education at Harvard Ophthalmology is immeasurable. She has been directly responsible for advancing multiple generations of faculty and trainees. Despite the many demands of her administrative and scientific leadership roles, she has always prioritized mentoring—meeting one-on-one with faculty and trainees, nominating them for awards and career development programs, and offering thoughtful, strategic guidance on clinical care and research.

Among her many achievements as Chair, Dr. Miller, along with David Hunter, MD, PhD, and Pat D’Amore, PhD, MBA, established the Harvard Ophthalmology Faculty Mentoring Program in 2014 to help junior faculty navigate the challenges of academic advancement. She also established the Ophthalmology Scholar Awards using royalties from her own discoveries to provide salary support for early-career clinician scientists and clinician educators; and she allocated departmental resources to support junior investigators with research staff, professional development workshops, and new opportunities for collaboration.

Dr. Miller has mentored an extraordinary number of trainees and faculty throughout her career. Below are just a handful of quotes from her mentees:

“Dr. Miller is the greatest role model, particularly for women and clinician scientists. She has helped many young ophthalmologists from the US and abroad navigate the often-challenging career path of academic medicine. As a testament to Dr. Miller, many of her mentees are now thought leaders in Ophthalmology and are carrying forward her excellence and commitment to mentoring for the next generation.”

“To young women faculty in particular, Dr. Miller’s meteoric rise as a clinician scientist, culminating in the development of two sight-saving therapies for retinal disease, while raising three children, has been a source of ongoing inspiration. I can confidently say that after my parents and husband, the person who has made the life I lead possible—that of wife, mother of four, active clinician, federally funded researcher, and happy human being—is Joan Miller.”

“Dr. Miller has always exceeded my expectations as a mentor. She is the ‘go to person’ for clinical, research, and personal guidance. She is one of the most humble, loving, and approachable people I know."
