Harvard Ophthalmology Receives Mass Lions Research Fund Grants

A key foundation partner to Harvard Ophthalmology, the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund continues to provide critical support to the programs of researchers at our affiliates. The Foundation will provide more than $400,000 in funding to support the following innovative research projects.

Boston Children’s Hospital

  • Eric Gaier, MD, PhD: Modeling brain-based visual impairment
  • Ye Sun, MD, MPH: Targeting inflammasomes through GSDMD for age-related macular degeneration
  • Mary Whitman, MD, PhD: Role of VEGF in extraocular muscles in development of nystagmus 

Mass Eye and Ear

  • Ryoji Amamoto, PhD: Development and regeneration of the photoreceptor outer segment
  • Dan Gong, MD: Intravitreal methotrexate use and outcomes in recurrent retinal detachments with proliferative vitreoretinopathy
  • Ines Lains, MD, PhD: Metabolomic profiles of artificial intelligence derived phenotypes of age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Schepens Eye Research Institute of Mass Eye and Ear 

  • Levi Kanu, MD: Steroid nanocrystals for high risk corneal grafts
  • Leo Kim, MD, PhD: Targeting RUNX1 as a mediator of antifibrosis in a human choroidal explant model
