Harvard Ophthalmology held its clinical trainee graduation on Thursday, June 9. The outdoor ceremony, held at the Boston Museum of Science, celebrated eight Harvard Ophthalmology residents, the AY2022–2023 Chief Resident, and two optometry residents, as well as 22 clinical fellows from Mass Eye and Ear, Joslin Diabetes Center, and Boston Children’s Hospital.
"As you embark on this exciting new stage of your professional life, remember to continue to learn and grow, to be grateful for the gifts and opportunities you are given, and to pay it forward, to your patients, to your profession, and to your community,” remarked Harvard Ophthalmology Chair Joan W. Miller, MD.
Several faculty and staff were also honored during the ceremony. Lucy Young, MD, PhD, received the Simmons Lessell Excellence in Education Award. This award recognizes faculty who have made—and continue to make—sustained and profound contributions to education— just like Dr. Lessell. Clifford Kim, MD, received the Clinical Teacher of the Year, while Nahyoung Grace Lee, MD, received the Surgical Teacher of the Year Award. Kathy Long, RN, a nurse in the Mass Eye and Ear Emergency Department, received the Residency Appreciation Award.
Two ophthalmology trainees were recognized with awards from Harvard Ophthalmology residents. Carolina Chiou, MD, an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery fellow, received the Fellow of the Year Award, and graduating resident Lisa Y. Lin MD, received the Resident Peer Recognition Award.
Residents Pursue Subspecialty Training
This year, seven of our eight graduating ophthalmology residents, and our chief resident Neal Patel, MD, will pursue additional subspecialty training at top-ranking fellowship programs around the country. We’re happy to report that several of them will complete their training with us at Mass Eye and Ear. Isaac Bleicher, MD, will be staying with us as Chief Resident and Director of Ocular Trauma, and optometry resident Julie Lin, OD, will be joining us as faculty at Mass Eye and Ear.
