Inês Laíns, MD, PhD, Receives Michels Fellowship Foundation Award

Inês Laíns, MD, PhD, is one of two recipients of the 2023-2024 Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation Award. This prestigious award, which provides monetary support, is given to exceptional second-year vitreoretinal surgery fellows in the United States after a rigorous and competitive review process. Dr. Laíns is completing a two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Mass Eye and Ear under the direction of Dean Eliott, MD, John B. Miller, MD, and Nemo Patel, MD During that time, she has also received the prestigious Evangelos S. Gragoudas Award from Macula Society.

 

Dr. Laíns earned her medical degree at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, and then initiated a combined PhD-Ophthalmology residency at the same University. During this time, she received a Junior Grant and Career Development Award from Harvard Medical School (HMS) and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology to support her research, as well as a research fellowship at Mass Eye and Ear under the mentorship of Deeba Husain, MD, and Joan W. Miller, MD. Following the completion of her PhD, Dr. Laíns chose to pursue an academic ophthalmology career in the United States and joined the Harvard Ophthalmology Residency Training Program.

 

Dr. Laíns is currently investigating the genetics, metabolomics, imaging, and functional tests of patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). She has presented her work at the European Society of Ophthalmology Meeting, the Meeting of the Club Jules Gonin, and the annual meetings of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
