Janey L. Wiggs, MD, PhD, Receives Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award

In recognition of her career-long commitment to mentoring, Janey L. Wiggs, MD, PhD, the Paul Austin Chandler Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, received the 2022 Harvard Ophthalmology Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award.

An internationally renowned medical geneticist, glaucoma specialist, and clinician scientist, Dr. Wiggs studies the genetic underpinnings of glaucoma, as well as other inherited ocular disorders. Her pioneering work has led to the development of effective screening and prevention strategies for glaucoma and other inherited eye diseases.

Throughout her 30-year career at Harvard Ophthalmology, Dr. Wiggs has served as a trusted advisor, role model, and friend to generations of medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. She has been especially successful in helping her mentees secure NIH research funding. Dr. Wiggs goes above and beyond, often working closely with her mentees to assist on specific goals and projects and career development strategies.

In recognition of her outstanding efforts in medical education, she is also a past recipient of the Teacher of the Year award from the Harvard Ophthalmology residents.
