Lotfi Merabet, OD, PhD, MPH, Receives Harvard Ophthalmology Excellence in Mentoring Award

Dr. Lotfi MerabetLotfi Merabet, OD, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Co-Director of the Mobility Enhancement and Vision Rehabilitation Center of Excellence, was recognized with the 2023 Harvard Ophthalmology Excellence in Mentoring Award for his dedication to mentoring trainees.

Dr. Merabet, the Frederick and Thaddeus Jakobiec Chair in Ophthalmology at Mass Eye and Ear, joined the Harvard Ophthalmology faculty in 2010 as a clinician scientist and member of Mass Eye and Ear's Vision Rehabilitation Service. He is a world-renowned expert in neuroplasticity associated with ocular and brain-based visual impairment and a pioneer in the development of assistive technology and advanced neuroimaging methodologies for the blind.

Throughout his career at Harvard Ophthalmology, Dr. Merabet has mentored more than 60 undergraduates, research fellows, and interns, and several have gone on to faculty roles at top academic institutions. He has also taught students at HMS, the Chan School of Public Health, and the Mass General Hospital Institute of Health Professions. In 2018, he received the prestigious A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award from HMS and in 2011 he was nominated for the HMS Young Mentor Award.
