Biography
Henry W. Zhou, MD, MS, is Director of Resident Academics ("Chief Resident") and Instructor in Ophthalmology at Harvard Ophthalmology and Director of the Eye Trauma Service at Mass Eye and Ear. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania as a Vagelos Scholar in Molecular Life Sciences, concurrently earning his BA in Biochemistry and MS in Chemistry. His Master's thesis work investigated the molecular basis of nervous system development, identifying target of poxn as a regulator of midline axon guidance. He earned his MD at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he was awarded an NIH T-35 award to investigate biomarkers of epilepsy using stereotactic EEG. As a Harvard Ophthalmology resident, he was selected as co-chair of the 2023 Chandler Conference, selected as chair of the 2027 Residents Course, and selected to attend the 2026 Heed Ophthalmic Foundation resident retreat. For his research, he received the VitreoRetinal Surgery Foundation Research Award and the Gragoudas-Folkman Award to investigate RNA therapeutics for proliferative vitreoretinopathy and diabetic retinopathy under the mentorship of Dr. Leo A. Kim. He plans to pursue additional training in vitreoretinal surgery and has research interests in ophthalmic trauma, novel surgical techniques, and therapeutic interventions for proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
