New EYESI Tool Testing

We recently added an upgraded, state-of-the-art EYESI Surgical Training Simulator for Intraocular Surgery to the Samuel and Nancy Jo Altschuler Ophthalmology Surgical Training Laboratory at Mass Eye and Ear. The EYESI Surgical Simulator is a critical tool that allows our residents to gain familiarity, skill, and confidence in the steps of cataract surgery prior to caring for patients in the operating room.

Harvard Ophthalmology continues to be a leader in surgical training and education. In 2005, the department initiated the first national training course to teach cataract surgery, now held annually at Mass Eye and Ear. In 2009, the department developed the Stepwise cataract surgery curriculum, which is now considered the standard. In 2012, former faculty members John I. Loewenstein, MD, and Bonnie An Henderson, MD, created the Cataract Master, a digital cataract surgical training program created at Harvard Ophthalmology that is now available nationally through the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Harvard Ophthalmology was an early adopter of the EYESI Surgical Simulator tool, and Mass Eye and Ear is among the first institutions in the county to receive the upgraded EYESI tool. Thank you to the Harvard Ophthalmology alumni who helped to support the purchase of this invaluable surgical training equipment.
