at Mass Eye and Ear

200 Anniversary Collage

Mass Eye and Ear has a rich history, founded on the principle of caring for the community and providing free access to eye care for those in need. In 1824, at the cusp of enormous advances in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, Edward Reynolds, MD, and John Jefferies II, MD, established the Massachusetts Charitable Eye Infirmary. The hospital expanded to become the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and later formed the nucleus of the Harvard Medical School Department of Ophthalmology in 1871.

Over the years, Mass Eye and Ear clinicians and scientists have made many groundbreaking discoveries that have transformed patient care and led the field in medical education. In this issue of Eye Witness, you can learn more about these seminal contributions, including the development of proton beam therapy for choroidal melanoma, anti-VEGF therapy for age-related macular degeneration and other retinal disorders, the Boston keratoprosthesis artificial cornea, optical coherence tomography, and so much more.
